Damn. This makes me feel good.

Joe Jackson - Real Men
Every boy should be forced to listen to and understand this song. Maybe write a paper about it.

Ewan McGregor - Gimme Danger
The little movie nobody's seen, Velvet Goldmine, is basically a roman a clef of David Bowie. Ewan McGregor plays the Iggy Pop analogue, and here performs a classic Stooges song.

David Bowie, Ian Hunter, & Mick Ronson - All the Young Dudes (Live)
My first artist repeat (not counting the Warren Zevon), but, hey, it's Bowie, that can be allowed.
Labels:
Cover,
David Bowie,

Schaffer the Darklord - The Rappist
Does anybody actually read this thing? Anyone look at these? Seriously, man, gimme some help here.

Warren Zevon - Keep Me In Your Heart
Because one Warren Zevon song is never enough. This is from his final album, written and recorded as he was dying of mesothelioma. If you don't tear up, just a little, watching this, you either have no heart or no sense of your own mortality.
Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
I've always enjoyed this song. Now, that talentless fucker Kid Rock has sampled it into some piece of shit paean to smoking weed and getting laid. Like we don't fucking have enough of those around. I have nothing against either of those, obviously, but, fuck, who gives a shit? Cover some new territory.

E Nomine - Vater Unser
A gothy/industrial version of the Lord's Prayer, in German and Latin. How could you go wrong?

Cobra Starship - Snakes on a Plane
The song is OK, but if you notice, about 2/3 of the way thru, Samuel L Jackson (who is cooler than any 3 guys you know put together) is sitting there reading. What is he reading? 100 Bullets: Strychnine Lives

Bob Marley - War
The words for this song were taken, almost entirely, from a speech Haile Selassie gave to the United Nations.

The Pogues & The Dubliners - Irish Rover
A few years ago, I found out that I'm 1/4 Irish. Don't ask how I didn't know that before. Anyway, ever since I learned that, I've been tempted to drink mass quantities, sing like Shane MacGowan, and get a Sinn Fein tattoo. Thank God I've only done 2 of them.

Subway to Sally - Ohne Liebe
Another example of Medieval Rock, this one a little more typical of the genre.

Meryn Cadell - The Sweater
I probably listened to this album about 1000 times when it came out. Bought 3 copies of it, I listened to the tape so much.
Letzte Instanz - Wir Sind Allien
I recently became entranced with this new sound out of Germany, frequently called Medieval Rock. Letzte Instanz is one of the practitioners of it, although they go fairly far afield sometimes. Schandmaul is probably more representative of the sound.

Michael Penn - No Myth
Marie and I were just discussing this evening, you don't hear this song often enough.

B.B. King & Tracy Chapman - The Thrill is Gone
I've always enjoyed Tracy Chapman. I figured out a while ago that she sings in a very traditional blues manner, but (and this is important) she sings it like a man. It really works well for her. And, of course, BB is, well, BB.

Meat Loaf - I Would Do Anything For Love
A lot of people complained about this song, the chorus specifically. They said it doesn't make sense: "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." What is that, people would ask. Well, it's whatever was said right before that line - it's fairly obvious.

Shona Laing - (Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy
I actually prefer Soviet Snow as a song, but the video for it BITES. Besides, I like the reference, given how few Kennedys there are left.

Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas
Jacques Brel was, quite simply, one of the greatest song writers of all time, in any language. While the most famous English translation of this song is called "If You Go Away," a far better one can be found here. However, the absolute desperation and desolation on Jacques' face in this video should give you enough meaning.

One of the best descriptions of young love I've ever heard, from a VASTLY underrated band.

Could We Start Again Please - from Jesus Christ Superstar
Compare and contrast: The first one is from the 1973 movie, the 2nd is from the 2000 stage production. Which one's better?

This is the official video for the song. I mention that because it kind of just looks like a homemade anime music video, but, really, it's not.

The braying sheep on my TV screen

Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Live)
While looking up Rollins Band vids for that last one, I came across this. I adore Placebo, of course, and saw them live recently here in Salt Lake. They ended the show with this Kate Bush cover (probably the first of her songs I heard, or at least, recognized), just the heartbeat sound going for about 5 minutes after everything else went silent. Fantastic.

David Bowie & Cher - Medley
Proof positive that even the great David Bowie isn't infallible.
And, by the way - WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ON CHER'S HEAD?
